Dining Out at The Oar House: Unraveling the Mystery of the Jezebel

Tuesday, June 16, 2026
By Rosie Gasowski

On Tuesday evening, June 16, members and guests of Buona Fortuna Lodge gathered at The Oar House Restaurant overlooking Bayou Chico for an evening filled with friendship, dining, history, and mystery.

Despite threatening skies and periodic rain showers throughout the evening, spirits remained high as members arrived and enjoyed the waterfront atmosphere. As promised, it was truly a “rain or shine” event, and the weather did little to dampen the enthusiasm of our Lodge family. In fact, the rain seemed to add a touch of drama to an evening devoted to one of history’s most mysterious women.

The highlight of the evening was The Mystery of Jezebel, a fascinating presentation that explored the life and legacy of one of history’s most intriguing women. Through a dramatic costumed portrayal by Autumn McAllister, Jezebel seemed to step out of the pages of history and into our gathering. Her performance brought depth and personality to a figure often remembered only through legend and controversy.

Guiding us through the story was Shirley Cotita, whose engaging narration examined the historical accounts, cultural influences, myths, and misconceptions surrounding Jezebel. Attendees learned that while Jezebel’s name has often become synonymous with intrigue and scandal, the historical woman behind the legend was far more complex than many realize. Shirley’s presentation encouraged us to look beyond popular assumptions and consider the social, political, and religious forces that shaped both Jezebel’s life and her reputation through the centuries. By Catherine Case

Buona Fortuna Lodge #2835 of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America proudly brought the vibrant traditions of Italy to downtown Pensacola during Gallery Night: Festa Italiana on May 15th, transforming Plaza Ferdinand and Jefferson Street into an evening filled with Italian music, dance, food, fellowship, and culture.
What began months ago as a vision became a remarkable community effort powered by more than 85 volunteers, performers, and members working together to share our heritage with thousands of attendees throughout the evening. The event was co-chaired by Cat Case and Dan Kaestle, whose leadership and dedication helped guide the extensive planning and coordination necessary for an event of this scale.

Guests experienced authentic Italian flavors from a variety of food tents led by dedicated lodge members. Second National Vice President Mark DeNunzio prepared Shrimp Scampi Napoletano, while Phyllis Baker led the Sausage & Peppers tent, and Ken Baker served Italian Roast Beef. Mary DeLorenzo welcomed guests with Italian coffee specialties, while Karen Ianniello and a dedicated team of bakers provided an incredible assortment of homemade Italian desserts. Rachelle Torjusen delighted the crowd with handcrafted Italian sodas, and Sally Valletta and George Garner drew long lines all evening with fresh cannoli favorites. Kristy Smith also led the Mercato tent, helping showcase Italian-inspired merchandise and T-shirts for guests throughout the evening. Read More.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!

Tuesday, May 5, 2026
By Catherine Case

The Buona Fortuna Sons & Daughters of Italy gathered at Blue Wahoos Stadium for a special evening celebrating Mamma during Mother’s Day Week with family and friends. From the moment our cheering squad filled Section 109, the stadium was alive with excitement, laughter, and Italian pride.

The evening was delightfully chaotic in the best way possible — baseball, hot dogs, chips, drinks, swag giveaways, and even dogs in the stands made for such a memorable night. Everyone eagerly waited to hear their seat number called to claim some Blue Wahoos swag, and the energy throughout the stadium was incredible!

The fun didn’t stop there — our President Ginny proudly threw out the first pitch, and former President Dan brought the crowd to life with a spirited performance of our National Anthem.

A heartfelt thank you to our Ospite, Shirley Cotita, for hosting such a wonderful evening at the ballpark as we gathered together to celebrate Mamma. Your warmth, enthusiasm, and generosity helped make the night truly special. Read More.

Parliamo! Comes Alive at Jaco’s: Language, Culture, and Cuisine on the Bay

Wednesday, April 29, 2026
By Gaia Prunotto

Last Thursday, April 23, Buona Fortuna Lodge hosted our second Parliamo! dinner at Jaco’s Bayfront Bar & Grille.

With a beautiful sunset over Pensacola Bay as our backdrop, 24 guests gathered to enjoy an evening of food, language, and Italian culture. Throughout the night, participants spoke in Italian while learning about regional dishes and culinary traditions from across Italy.

We began the evening with an introduction to Italian regional cuisine, followed by engaging matching and sorting exercises featuring local dishes—some of which challenged even the most experienced among the group. Guests explored the traditional ingredients of Northern and Southern Italy and their deep connection to the land and culture.

Along the way, we discovered new dishes such as lampredotto—a Florentine sandwich made from cow stomach—and canederli, hearty bread dumplings from Friuli Venezia Giulia. Read More.

Spring Bocce Picnic & Tournament Brings Famiglia Together

By Cat Case

Although we set up in drenching rain keeping hope alive in the forecast, the skies cleared up and dried up all the rain for a friendly competition as players of all skill levels stepped up to participate in this cherished Italian tradition. Whether competing for the top spot or simply enjoying the camaraderie, the spirit of the day was unmistakable—laughter, connection, and community were everywhere.

This year’s tournament brought exciting matchups and great sportsmanship throughout the day. Congratulations to our winners:

1st Place: Andy Fricano and James Fricano (a special father-son team, playing in honor of James’ Nonno, Giacomo Fricano)
2nd Place: George Garner and Alex Chesley
3rd Place: Dan Kaestle and Rocco Nozzolini
4th Place: David and Rosie Gasowski

Bravissimi to all who played!

We also had a fun and successful 50/50 raffle, with congratulations to Rosie, who took home $164.00!
Of course, no Buona Fortuna gathering would be complete without an incredible meal. A special thank you to our Ospiti, Ken and Phyllis Baker, who provided an outstanding menu highlighted by their now famous Italian Beef, along with a full picnic spread that was enjoyed by all. Read More.

Celebrating Commitment, Honoring Heritage: 20 Years of Buona Fortuna

Sunday, April 26, 2026

This year marks a meaningful milestone for the Buona Fortuna Family—20 years as a Lodge. It is a moment to reflect not only on how far we have come, but on the people who continue to give this Lodge its heart and purpose.

What grounds us—what keeps members coming back year after year—is our Italian cultura.
It is not simply heritage we remember… it is heritage we live.

It lives in the way we gather around a table, in the pride we take in our traditions, in the stories we share, and in the sense of belonging that turns a group into la famiglia. It is this connection—to culture, to one another, and to something larger than ourselves—that inspires commitment over time.

Because staying involved in Buona Fortuna is not about obligation.
It is about identity.
It is about celebrating this part of our lives together.

Buona Fortuna Uncorked: Discovering Italy’s Hidden Wine Regions

Monday, April 20, 2026
By Diana Mancini

What a memorable evening we shared at Tales from the Vineyards, as our Buona Fortuna family came together to explore some of Italy’s lesser-known—but truly remarkable—wine regions.

A heartfelt thank you to our Ospite, Val Ruffo, whose deep knowledge of wine and passion for sharing it brought an added richness to the experience. Val has a way of drawing people in—encouraging conversation, curiosity, and connection—and that spirit was felt throughout the room.

We are also incredibly grateful to our sommeliers, Chrystal Sparks and Stephanie of Total Wine, for guiding us through this journey with such expertise and enthusiasm. From the very first Cin Cin, they set the tone for an engaging and interactive evening, recognizing who we are as Buona Fortuna and embracing the energy of our group.

Together, we traveled across Italy—from north to south—discovering hidden gems from regions that often don’t get the spotlight they deserve. Each pour brought something new: a story, a history, a unique expression of terroir. And with every glass, the room became more animated. Questions flowed, conversations deepened, and members leaned in—not just to taste, but to truly understand.

Night to Remember at McGuires – Connection, Celebration & Buona Fortuna Spirit

Wednesday, April 15, 2026
By Catherine Case

What a night at McGuire’s Irish Pub!

We had 44 Buona Fortuna members come together—and from the moment we walked in, you could feel it. The room was alive with conversation, laughter, and that easy, welcoming energy that makes everyone feel like they belong.

This is what our Dining Out nights are all about—pulling up a chair, sharing stories, meeting someone new, and reconnecting like no time has passed. Tables didn’t stay separate for long… conversations stretched across the room, people moved around, introductions were made, and by the end of the night it felt like one big gathering of amici.

We were especially happy to welcome new members Gregg Bennett and Therasa Vontinelli—and it didn’t take long before they were right in the middle of the fun, getting to know everyone. That’s the Buona Fortuna way.

One of the best moments of the night? The entire room joining together to sing “Tanti Auguri” for Ed and Nancy Castro—and not just our group… even fellow McGuire’s guests joined in! It was one of those spontaneous moments that reminds you how special these gatherings really are.

And then there was the pretzel… ??
Easily the biggest pretzel most of us have ever seen, delivered right to Jilian Carlo’s table—and yes, it turned heads all across the room. Part celebration, part spectacle, and completely unforgettable.

The food was fantastic, the energy was high, and the connections were real. Nights like this remind us—it’s not just about where we go… it’s about how we show up for each other when we get there.

A big thank you to our Ospiti, Glen Cunningham and Adaina Biggs, for setting the tone and making sure everyone felt welcomed and included throughout the evening. Read More.

Another great day was spent with our Buona Fortuna family playing Scopa, an Italian card game tradition! The sound of cards on the table, laughter among friends, and a spirit of friendly competition set the tone for a truly memorable day with our Buona Fortuna family. What began as a simple gathering quickly came to life as members embraced the tradition and excitement of Scopa together. From seasoned players to first-timers, the joy of the game—and the connections it creates—was felt at every table.

Another great day was spent with our Buona Fortuna family playing Scopa; an Italian card game traditionally enjoyed by adults gathered on park benches, at the beach, or anywhere you could bring people together around a table.

Through Giochiaomo Scopa, Buona Fortuna is helping to reignite this memorable Italian tradition, and this gathering was a perfect example of that spirit in action. Read More.

Tambourines, Tarantella & a Terrific First Night!

Sunday, March 22, 2026
by Autumn McAllister

Cari Amici,

What a beautiful beginning!

Our first rehearsal was more than just learning steps—it was the start of something meaningful. We are not simply preparing for performances… we are stepping into the rich tradition of Italian cultural dance, where music, movement, and community come together to tell a story.

From the very first moments, the room was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and open hearts. Each person brought something special—whether it was experience, curiosity, or simply the willingness to try. That spirit is exactly what makes these dances come alive.

As we began working through the tarantella circle and partner elements, we focused on more than timing and positioning. We explored the connection between dancers, the rhythm that draws people together, and the joy that is at the heart of these traditions. The tarantella is not just a dance—it is a celebration of life, of courtship, of community… often danced in anticipation of a wedding, where couples come together and the entire group shares in that happiness. Honoring a Sacred Italian Tradition: Our St. Joseph’s Alter

The Buona Fortuna Family gathered to present our St. Joseph Altar, sharing with our community one of the most treasured traditions of Sicilian Italian heritage.

The St. Joseph Altar is more than a table. It is a remembrance, an offering, and a living expression of faith, gratitude, and charity—passed down through generations of Italian families who believed that blessings are meant to be shared.

Rooted in the history of Sicily, this tradition recalls a time of drought and hardship, when families turned in prayer to St. Joseph for relief. When their prayers were answered, they prepared a table in thanksgiving and opened it to others. That act of devotion became a lasting tradition—one that continues today, carrying with it the values of humility, abundance, remembrance, and love of family.

In presenting the St. Joseph Altar, we were not simply arranging bread, candles, flowers, and sweets. We were honoring those who came before us—our parents, grandparents, and ancestors—who preserved these customs in their homes and communities. Through this altar, we remember that Italian traditions are carried not only in words, but in gestures of welcome, in recipes shared by hand, and in tables opened with love. Read More.

A single humble bean helped families survive famine in Sicily.

The St. Joseph Altar is a cherished Sicilian-Italian Catholic tradition rooted in a time of famine in Sicily, when the humble fava bean helped sustain families through hunger and hardship. In gratitude, families prepared a table in honor of St. Joseph and opened it to share with others, creating a lasting tradition of faith, hospitality, and charity. This year’s celebration, hosted by the Order Sons & Daughters of Italy – Buona Fortuna Lodge, Historic St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the Italian Cultural Society of Pensacola, will take place on Sunday, March 15, with Mass at 11:00 AM, followed by a procession to the Hall for the Blessing of the Altar and a $5 spaghetti meal with approximately 150 servings available.

That small fava bean became a lasting symbol of hope, gratitude, and sharing — and it is why the St. Joseph Altar remains one of the most meaningful traditions in Italian Catholic heritage. Read More

Pizza Pizza at the Wine Bar

The atmosphere was warm and lively, the pizza was delicious, and the wine flowed as freely as the laughter around the tables. One of the highlights of the night was the incredible special — a handcrafted pizza paired for only $10 dollars and a carafe of wine for the price of a glass…Yes, you read that right! Crispy crust, bubbling cheese, savory toppings, and a generous carafe poured right at the table. Ice Flyers Night Out: Mardi Gras, Beads, and a Nail-Biter Win!

On Saturday, January 31, 2026, 49 Buona Fortuna members and family joined me for our second (now annual!) group outing to cheer on the Pensacola Ice Flyers at the Pensacola Bay Center—and we were proud to have the largest group presence in the arena that night. And what a night to do it: it was the coldest night—9° windchill with 40 mph winds—but all it took was cheering all night long to warm up. You could feel it everywhere: our section filled with familiar faces, laughter, and that unmistakable Buona Fortuna spirit—an Italian-style night out where the fun is shared, the cheering is loud, and nobody is a stranger for long.

With the arena packed for Mardi Gras Night, the excitement didn’t stop when the puck dropped. Between the periods—after the 1st and again after the 2nd—trucks rolled out onto the ice with revelers tossing Mardi Gras beads into a super-enthusiastic crowd. Thousands of beads flew, fans roared, and our group jumped right into the spirit of it all—smiling, laughing, and cheering like only Buona Fortuna can. What made it special wasn’t just the theme—it was watching our Italian Buona Fortuna family do what we do best: show up together, bring the joy, and turn a hockey night into a celebration.

A special highlight at the start of the evening was the unfurling of the American flag—and we were honored to see our own Jim Perri, George Garner, Sally Valletta, Ginny Barberi, and Brian Hazelett selected to help on the ice for that moment. It was one of those proud “Buona Fortuna” scenes—community, gratitude, and togetherness all in one.

And then came the game… a true nail-biter to the bitter end (pun fully intended—especially with that cold outside!). The Fayetteville Marksmen jumped ahead early, but the Ice Flyers battled back and pulled off a 4–3 win, sealing it with a strong third-period surge. Goals from Mike Moran, Zack Bross, and Tim Faulkner helped power the comeback, and our section was loud, proud, and fully invested until the final buzzer.

I also learned the Ice Flyers are sitting near the top of the league standings and are very much in the playoff hunt—so we picked a great night to show up and cheer them on. As a fun surprise, Bailey Drouant presented me with a special souvenir: a hard-earned Ice Flyers hockey puck, which absolutely made my night.

A huge thank-you to our Ice Flyers representative, Eric Kagdis, for taking such great care of our group—especially with the Ice Flyers signature caps and the unforgettable invitation to step onto the ice for a group photo at the end of the evening. And to Diana, Cat, and Rosie—thank you for helping pull everything together and making it so easy for everyone to just show up and have fun. Read More

A heartfelt thank you to Arnell Watkins, Kevin Strawn, and Brian Hazelett for helping with setup and making sure everything was ready to go. Your behind-the-scenes support helped the afternoon run smoothly.

Special appreciation to Phyllis Baker for her delicious beans, rice, and sausage — a true crowd favorite and the perfect comfort food for a winter gathering. And a big grazie to everyone who brought potluck dishes and shareables. The generosity, variety, and love poured into the food made the day feel like family.

We’re incredibly grateful to Ed Castro, Brian Hazelett, Phyllis Baker, Georgetta “Peaches” Sharpe, and Ginny Barberi for keeping the games flowing — moderating tables, helping new players learn the game, selling cards, and collecting money for the pots. Your patience and good humor made the experience welcoming and fun for everyone.

A special grazie to our Ospite, Kathia Watkins, for bringing her signature joy, laughter, and Italian flair to the afternoon. From her playful side games to the extra moments of fun she always weaves in, her spirit and enthusiasm helped turn a great event into a truly memorable one. Read More

Feast of the Seven Fishes 2025

Our Buona Fortuna family gathered for a truly memorable Feast of the Seven Fishes celebration at Carrabba’s, enjoying an evening filled with wonderful food, lively conversation, and cherished Italian tradition. The evening began in a meaningful way as our Chaplain, JC Kelleher, offered a blessing before the meal, setting a warm and reflective tone for the night. Rosanna Lorette then beautifully read the traditional Christmas toast in Italian, while guests followed along using the printed sheets provided—making the moment inclusive, heartfelt, and a lovely nod to our shared heritage.

The room looked like a pumpkin-themed masterpiece, thanks to the talented trio of Ginny Barbari, Diana Fordham, and Cat Case, who somehow made autumn explode in the best possible way. Gourds, leaves, and pumpkins everywhere—Martha Stewart would have been jealous!

Before dinner, Rosie Gasowski kept everyone entertained with her Italian Thanksgiving Word Match, getting our brains going just enough to justify seconds later. She also placed conversation cards at each table—and, microphone in hand, she bravely called on guests to share their answers to questions like “Who taught you your first Italian word and what was it?” and “What’s your favorite Italian toast?” The answers were priceless—half touching, half hilarious, and a few possibly unfit for translation! Cappuccino, Conversation, Community: Buona Fortuna Lodge Pensacola Welcomes New Members

Sunday, October 26, 2025
By Joe Lorette

Buona Fortuna Lodge Pensacola packed the Drowsy Poet Coffee Shop for a caffeinated welcome to more than two dozen new members, with Italian and English bouncing around the room like family. Lodge leaders and longtime members showed up early, filled every chair (and even the piano bench), and made sure every new face was greeted by name. The energy felt less like a meeting and more like home — and this is just the beginning.

The room was filled with loud conversations and both the English and Italian languages could easily be heard. Every chair and stool in the room was occupied, the piano bench was taken, and people were standing along the walls. No, it wasn’t the Fiumicino airport in Roma nor the train station at Piazza Garibaldi in Napoli; it was the Drowsy Poet Coffee Shop in Pensacola Florida where Buona Fortuna Lodge was welcoming 25 of their new members.
